Utah Mother Charged with Second-Degree Felony Child Abuse

Officials are accusing a Utah mother of starving her 12-year old son and leaving him inside a dark feces-covered bathroom for at least one year. 36-year-old Brandy Jaynes has been charged with second-degree felony child abuse after the 12-year old boy’s father found him, emaciated, laying on the bathroom floor in his home in Toquerville, Utah.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office Lt. David Crouse said that investigators discovered 3 square feet of duct tape mounted on the light switch so it could not be turned on, a camera the mother used to watch her son suffer, and a few cans of beans, feces and a blanket. After speaking to the 12-year old's siblings, it was discovered that the siblings had not even spoken to their brother through the door in six months!

Crouse says a doctor who treated the boy says it is the worst case of malnourishment he had ever seen. The reason Brandy Jaynes gave for this unthinkable crime is that she locked him for his safety when she would leave the house. She even went on to say that her son chose to sleep in the bathroom. Her children are currently in state custody and she’s expected back in court on January 17.
