When it comes to getting college applications together, getting those glowing letters of recommendation is a major part of the process. And Black-ish star Yara Shahidi has the college recommendation letter we could only dream of getting: It comes straight from the desk of none other than former FLOTUS Michelle Obama. The two women have gotten to know each other by crossing paths at events like Glamour's International Day of the Girl event, where they spoke about the importance of education for girls—and the former First Lady has even said that Black-ish is her favorite TV show.
But Obama really showed her support for Shahidi by recommending her to the four colleges she's applied to—one of which is Harvard, where Obama attended law school and where daughter Malia Obama will go after taking a gap year.
"She is very amazing and such a supporter, which is something very surreal to say," Shahidi told W recently.
Shahidi plans to take a year off from school before jumping into her freshman year, just like the oldest Obama daughter. “I know when Malia Obama announced [she was deferring], she got a lot of slack, but I feel like what’s interesting is I know so many people that are deferring. It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work,” Shahidi said. “I’ve been working more than half of my life, and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities, so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”
At the moment Shahidi plans to major in African-American studies and sociology—and we're excited to see which college she'll call her alma mater.
