For decades, Sesame Street has been a leading force in educating children of all backgrounds. Iconic characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and Big Bird have ushered children throughout their adolescents while becoming a part of pop-culture in their own right. Now, Sesame Street is continuing its method of appealing to children with their newest character Alex, whose father is in jail.
Research shows that 1 in 28 (3.6%) of American children have a parent in jail. 25 years ago, that number was 1 in 125 (0.8%). Sesame Street acknowledges that it must keep up with statistics in order to highlight the experiences of all children.
Appearance wise, Alex looks like most puppets. He has blue fuzzy hair, a green nose, wears a grey hoodie and a stripped shirt.
The topic of Alex's father arises when the idea to ask their dads for help with a fun project comes up, Alex gets sad and then tells the other Muppets about his father. Alex sighs, "I just miss him so much . . . I usually don’t want people to know about my Dad.”
Alex will not be a main member of the cast, but he will be an important part of the show's online tool.
